What cultural associations would you like to see in the races?

Postby Jaclau » Thu Jul 30, 2015 8:50 pm

Me, I'd like to see one of the races to be culturally similar to Native Americans. I feel that Native Americans have a very colorful and inspiring culture that gets overlooked, generally in favor of Druids, Romans, or Viking type cultures (which are interesting, but common). Some tribes were nomadic, some maintained an set area. Most were very efficient fighters, they had powerful shamans, and excellent crafters. Their stories are bright and educational, and everything revolves around nature.

So what type cultures would anyone else like to see?

I know for a fact that our Lore Master wants to use some cultural items for a lot of the races! I'll que him into this specific thread and have him weigh in as well :)

Personally, I don't really do much background on races lately because there hasn't been any so I'd love to see a LOT of them put to use and I think the Native American cultures have a lot of value to offer!

Great input! I agree.

Personally I'd love to see some of the ancient Mayan cultural traditions make their way into the game. Since much is shrouded in mystery, I think it'd be pretty easy to implement and flow well.

Hello,

One of the goals is to have a wide representation of real human culture in the lore of the game, albeit in the vein of fantasy. I can't go into detail at this time, but the plan is for there to be elements of some Native American cultures included in the game, along with elements of many other cultures around the world. That having been said, there will at no point be a game culture that someone will be able to point to and say that is represents any one real-world culture in all respects. If, however, you look at the game "through a glass, darkly," so to speak, you may recognize some elements of your favorite Earth cultures and customs, and some of which you may have never heard.

Hello!

For the fairy-like races, I was wondering if you will follow the Court of the Seelie/Unseelie lore within Celtic mythology. Seems like a lot of background can be pulled from there with various fey options of Light/Dark rivalry scenarios (Winter King, Faerie Queen, Selkies and Nymphs etc.)

I've read a few novels on them are they can be quite fascinating when you can make the connections to literature or even ethics today. Just throwing the idea out there since I haven't seen many MMOs follow this kind of lore before!

Cheers.

You made me think IMMEDIATELY of the Dresden Files!!!!

I actually appreciate some of the summoning aspects from that book which you'll see in one of my stories :)

For the Fae, the main sources of inspiration do come from Celtic Mythology, primarily the Tuatha Dé Danann, but are not bound by only that. For instance, one of the rites of passage for the Fae is actually inspired by that of a remote Ethiopian tribe called the Hamar.
